Pretty Little Liars recap Season 6, Episode 7: O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Just when I thought I had “Pretty Little Liar’s” formula down, the show throws a major curve ball. A Liar finally did the sensible thing and called 911.

OK, so it wasn’t a Liar from the main lineup. As deceptive as she is, I’m pretty sure that Ali only counts as an auxiliary Liar. But Aria almost called 911! After six seasons of questionable detective work on the part of a group of high school students, even that counts for something.

Charles wasn’t playing around in his creepy birthday card last week. Mr. DiLaurentis whisked Ali away to a hotel out of town, but Jason refused to leave. On the way out of Rosewood, Ali found said birthday card and faced the facts: “He’s alive and he’s coming for us, isn’t he?”

Check. And check.

Jason found a birthday message of his own: a single red balloon and an invitation to Charles’s birthday party at a local arcade.

Meanwhile, the Liars zeroed in on Lesli Stone, arranging a meeting with her and Mona to find out what Lesli knows about her former Radley roommate, Charles. Lesli was a no-show. Mona’s only explanation was that Lesli felt she wasn’t stable enough to handle the confrontation. “That girl is one lost marble short of a breakdown.”

The girls ended up getting the information they needed from an unlikely source: Ali, who confirmed that her brother is alive and that her other brother, Jason, was likely to try making contact with him. Efforts to reach Jason were unsuccessful, but Hanna took a page from Caleb to make sure she and her friends could find him easily. This week in the enigma that is Hanna Marin: she doesn’t know a Cyclops from a cyborg, but Hanna knows how to install a tracking device on a vehicle.

Reminder: Hanna is really, really smart. So smart in fact that she got into some pretty prestigious (and expensive) colleges. Her father refused to pay for school, but Hanna got some good news this week: Mrs. Marin applied for a ton of scholarships and one came through for a whopping $30,000.

Hanna was happy about her turn of fortune until she realized the company that granted the scholarship was associated with Radley and, most likely, the DiLaurentis family. Upon this realization, Hanna wanted nothing to do with the money, but her mom had already deposited the check.

It’s possible that the check is coming straight out of A’s account. But this is a minor problem compared to the whole microchip situation the girls found themselves in last week. Apparently, the chips were nothing a little iodine and a scalpel couldn’t fix. Did you know that you could learn surgery on YouTube?

Microchips out, the girls hatched a plan to follow Jason to meet Charles. But Spencer — tired of lying to her boyfriend —decided to come clean on the condition that he didn’t tell Tanner what they were up to. Toby insisted on going to find Charles himself, but not before inadvertently devouring some marijuana-laced Gummi bears that Spencer’s barista friend stealthily put in her bag.

Jason showed up expecting to meet Charles — it looked like it might have been the brotherly reunion he’d planned — but Ali had a different idea. Thanks to some packets of decaf coffee and a bottle of sleeping pills, Ali managed to get away from her dad and into — surprise! — Mona’s car. Mona, we hardly knew ye — acting vulnerable (hi Mike Montgomery!) and being nice to Alison DiLaurentis.

It was during this friendly trip back to Rosewood that Ali made that fateful 911 call. “My name is Alison DiLaurentis, my friends and family are in danger. I know who A is. His name is Charles DiLaurentis and he’s my brother.”

Once the police got involved, things didn’t go so well for Jason — who had expected to meet Charles alone — or Toby, who was high in a room full of flashy and loud arcade games. Need I say more?

Charles got away from the cops, but not before launching a series of skee-balls at Toby and his colleagues (including his partner and Ali’s unfortunate love interest, Lorenzo). Unable to stay away from the action, Spencer, Emily, Hanna and Aria showed up in time to watch the disaster unfold. They also landed in hot water with their parents.

No one was more upset than Jason DiLaurentis, whose sobriety took a hit after the failed brotherly reunion. Ali got home in time to convince him to put down the bottle and to hear a child’s voice from upstairs, beckoning Jason to play with him. It turned out to be one of those old home movies featuring Ali and Jason celebrating Charles’s birthday as kids, under the guise that Charles was a second cousin.

Charles was nowhere to be found at the DiLaurentis house, but he left a message that makes it pretty clear that Charles and A are one and the same: I wAnted to trust you.

Lingering questions: Was it really Mr. D who called Jason? Wouldn’t he have been asleep? Are Ali and Jason going to try to help their brother? Also, since when does the Rosewood police department know about A? Where did Hanna’s scholarship money come from?
