Waterford, Virginia, is a place almost frozen in time. The village, which was founded by members of a religious group called the Quakers in 1733, has homes that date back 200 years or more. The Corner Store was built around 1900, and the Old School a decade later. There are no strip malls.
Every October, the village invites visitors to learn about its history while listening to music, sampling food and watching craft demonstrations, such as candlemaking and woodworking. There are Civil War reenactors and street performers. And kids can learn by doing: Many craftspeople enjoy having young helpers assist them in making a clay pot or a batch of apple butter.
